Join Mary Ann to create your own White Russian, a classic sweater with a basic lace pattern. Designer Thea Colman has crafted a sweater that looks good on every body type with variations for length (cropped or hip), neck shape (cowl or crew) and sleeve length. The pattern includes sizes up to 61.5" circumference.

Skills taught in this class:

  • Top down sweater construction
  • Short row shaping
  • M1L, M1R increasing (knit and purl)
  • Cable Cast On

Required materials:
  • Pattern - White Russian by Thea Colman ($8.00; Ravelry)
  • Yarn (purchased separately at 3 Kittens) - DK weight yarn - 900-1500 yards. We recommend WYS Fleece Bluefaced Leciester DK (100% BFL Wool, 30% Yak; 247 yards - 4-7 balls) or Universal Deluxe DK Tweed SW (90% SW Wool, 3% Viscose, 7% Acrylic; 284 yards - 4-6 balls)
  • Needles - US 6/4.0mm 24-32" circular and US 6/4mm 12-16" circular or size to obtain gauge plus US 10/6mm needle for bind off
  • Gauge - 5.5 sts/inch in stockinette stitch
  • Notions - Knit kit, including stitch markers, Purl Strings or stitch holders; pencil and paper for note taking

  • Purchase and wind yarn (if necessary) prior to the first class.
  • Read through your pattern and make a note of any questions you have; choose your neckline, sleeve length, and body length.
  • Knit a gauge swatch at least 6" square in stockinette stitch. Measure your swatch and make note of your stitch and row gauge. Wash/block the swatch. When dry, re-measure to make certain you are getting correct gauge. If your stitch gauge does not equal 5.5 sts/inch, reknit your swatch with different size needles. Bring swatch(es) and before/after measurements to the first class.

Due to Covid 19, we have new protocols for our classes that we have put in place to keep staff and students safe:
  • All classes will occur when the store is closed.
  • All classes have a maximum of 4 students and a minimum of 3 students (in order to be able to pay our instructors). Due to this very tight window, we may need to cancel classes at the last minute. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.
  • Students are required to wear a mask (covering the nose and mouth) throughout the class. unless all participants are comfortable not wearing a mask. We respectfully ask that anyone not yet vaccinated continue to wear a mask while in the store.
  • Hand sanitizer will be available on the class table. We encourage everyone to use it as they feel necessary.
  • Class tables are set up to accommodate all students with at least 6 feet of space between them and across the tables.
  • No food or drink is allowed.
Cancellation Policy - Student cancellations must be made at least one week prior to the class to receive a refund for the class fee. After that date, class fees are not refundable and cannot be transferred to another class. Any yarn or supplies purchased for the class are subject to our regular return policy3 Kittens may need to cancel a class if not enough people sign up, but we try to provide other options when we can. We may need to reschedule due to weather or teacher illness.

Instructor: Mary Ann
Instructor Bio: Mary Ann Brooks was born and raised in South Minneapolis and now lives in Apple Valley. She has been with 3K for 5 years and teaches beginning knitting, project classes and tool box sessions. Mary Ann started knitting when she was 7 years old and although her projects were not fabulous, she has continued knitting throughout her life and knits every day. Her knitting has improved over the years! Knitting samples for the shop is a favorite because it challenges knitting skills and requires knitting that is sometimes out of her comfort zone. Her other favorite is teaching. Mary Ann enjoys encouraging students to learn new skills either as a first time knitter or as a more experienced knitter trying a pattern that requires new skills or a different method. Mary Ann says " I imagine knitting will always be a part of my life and I hope to be with 3K for many years!"
