The Knitter's Tool Box: Mattress Stitch for Seams

THE KNITTER'S TOOL BOX:  This series of one-hour classes is designed to increase your knitterly skill set. Choose from a variety of classes held throughout the year.

Mattress Stitch is a great way to seam your knits. Not only does it produce a clean finish, but it is worked from the public side of the item - which means it is easier to see what you're doing and how it will affect the final outcome. Class Type: Hands On

Skills taught in this class:

  • Mattress stitch in stockinette stitch
  • Mattress stitch in garter stitch
  • Seaming a sleeve to a shoulder
Required Materials:
  • Yarn - worsted weight
  • Needles - not necessary for class (swatches to be done with US 8/5.0mm)
  • Notions - tapestry needle

Using US 8/5.0mm needles and worsted weight yarn, knit and bring the following swatches to class -

  2. Two (2) 6"x6" garter stitch swatches; bind off

Instructor: Mary Ann
Instructor Bio: Mary Ann Brooks was born and raised in South Minneapolis and now lives in Apple Valley. She has been with 3K for 5 years and teaches beginning knitting, project classes and tool box sessions. Mary Ann started knitting when she was 7 years old and although her projects were not fabulous, she has continued knitting throughout her life and knits every day. Her knitting has improved over the years! Knitting samples for the shop is a favorite because it challenges knitting skills and requires knitting that is sometimes out of her comfort zone. Her other favorite is teaching. Mary Ann enjoys encouraging students to learn new skills either as a first time knitter or as a more experienced knitter trying a pattern that requires new skills or a different method. Mary Ann says " I imagine knitting will always be a part of my life and I hope to be with 3K for many years!"
